Brian will lead us through an interactive and experiential training intended to nurture providers’ core intentions that motivate us in our work with families, grow our reflective capacity for the purpose of connecting to wider circles of community and culture, and provide concrete ideas and information for working more effectively with Native American families.

The training should empower everyone to approach difficult discussions and situations with a humble perspective of understanding that not all groups of people feel loved in our society and we have much work to do to achieve this goal.

Learning Goals

  • Describe an understanding of and knowledge about Native cultural upbringing, the experience of living in two worlds, and the challenges this brings to the perspective of an individual trying to stay culturally connected while becoming 'successful' in another world’s standards.
  • Develop an understanding of all our implicit bias (including when it comes from our clients).
  • Create an individual self-care plan rooted in humility and client-minded thinking while supporting the Native community.
  • Identify new ideas for familiarizing yourself with tribal communities in your area.

Brian WilliamsBrian Williams, M.S., CEO and founder of Weaving Wellness & Diversity, is a Native American community leader from the Redwood Valley Little River Band of Pomo Indians, located in Redwood Valley, California. He has worked in child development and parent training situations for 20 years. He is driven to create understanding and perspective of the barriers to our Native American youth.

In addition, he strives to teach youth of any culture how best to navigate social dynamics in which their culture may not be heavily represented. Brian loves approaching all human beings as possible allies in making an inclusive community where we are all treated with love and respect.

The fee for this training is waived for participants in the Redwood Coast Regional Center catchment area of Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt and Del Norte counties through a partnership with the DDS Service Access & Equity Grant "Increasing Access to Early Start in Tribal Communities.” If this applies to you, please email IDA at [email protected] and we will register you for free.
