Gestalt language processing seems to be the latest buzzword in the autism space, but it’s far from a passing trend: it’s here to stay! Gestalt language processors first use echolalia to communicate before moving through a developmental process toward self-generated communication. In this 2-hour presentation, participants will learn about gestalt language development and how to connect and communicate with early GLPs with a neuro-affirming, child-led approach that is empowering and joyful for all.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the four main stages of gestalt language development
  • Identify 5 characteristics of gestalt language processors
  • Deliver effective language models for GLPs
  • Identify opportunities for modeling language within daily routine
  • Define three qualities of great language partners in communicating with gestalt language processors

Nicole is a certified speech-language pathologist with ten years of experience working with neurodivergent children in a variety of clinical settings. After dreaming about it for a decade, she opened a private practice called Connections Speech Pathology to provide play-based, child-led speech therapy services in her community. Nicole is passionate about providing neurodiversity affirming therapy and beyond to autistic kids in her clinic. She is enthusiastic about supporting gestalt language processors and providing access to AAC to as many children as possible.
