Feeding related concerns are among the most common issues in preschool children; therefore, it is critical that early intervention providers know how to support caregivers dealing with a pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) or swallowing disorder. This presentation will provide an overview of common etiologies, environmental impacts, as well as common misconceptions regarding feeding and mealtimes. Learn how feeding specialists distinguish picky eaters versus problem feeders while coaching caregivers to promote carry-over during mealtimes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe pediatric feeding and/or swallowing disorder is and how they are defined
  • Identify at least 2 common etiologies of PFDs and identify factors that may limit feeding skill development
  • Discuss the impact of family dynamics and caregivers own relationship to feeding on PFDs
  • Identify at least 2 resources for obtaining more information for additional learning related to pediatric feeding disorders
  • Discuss common mealtime and feeding misconceptions in order to support families as they repair their relationship with feeding routines.
